In a move legislators said was a mark of the territory’s maturity, the House of Assembly on Thursday passed a law to protect those who give evidence during criminal investigations.

The Witness Protections Act was supported by all the legislators, and will help law enforcement solve crimes, they said.

Especially in the case of “organised crime,” authorities must protect witnesses, said Vernon Malone (R-at large).

Several lawmakers noted that the programme may be costly, but Deputy Premier Dancia Penn said it will be “well worth it.”
