Lawmakers passed a new Police Act and an Infectious Diseases Notification Act, but postponed debate on a law to authorise electronic surveillance at their latest sitting, which wrapped up Monday evening.

Health and Social Development Minister Ronnie Skelton applauded the updated diseases notification legislation, which he said covers ailments of global and regional significance.

Mr. Skelton also gave updates on plans for the new hospital, National Health Insurance, the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic on Virgin Gorda and the planned home for senior citizens in Spooners.

Work on the new hospital “has been progressing steadily since construction resumed last year,” Mr. Skelton said, adding that the contractor has been working from the top down, “starting with electrical conduits, then water supply lines, followed by the medical gas lines and then air-conditioning ducts.”
