Her red dress glittering under the lights, Sheroma Hodge walked to the microphone in front of thousands of people in Sao Paulo, Brazil during the Miss Universe Pageant.

“Sheroma Hodge, Miss British Virgin Islands,” she said, before walking back to the line of 88 other beauty queens from around the world.

Those were the only words the 2010 Miss BVI would get to say during Monday’s show, which was reportedly viewed by more than a billion people.

After the contestants introduced themselves, the emcee announced the 16 finalists who previously had been chosen to compete in the main event that night. Ms. Hodge was not among them, to the dismay of her fans watching from home.

Still, many residents spoke highly of her brief appearance on Monday.
