Police recovered what appear to be a human leg, arm and other body parts that washed ashore on Peter Island on Friday, according to acting Police Information Officer Beverly James.

Members of the police Major Crime Team and Scenes of Crime Unit responded and conducted an investigation.

The suspected human remains were tagged as “John Doe” and are currently at the Peebles Hospital morgue, Ms. James said.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Officials did not say whether they suspect a connection between the body parts and a boat carrying migrants that capsized in the waters south of Virgin Gorda on the night of July 10 or the early morning of July 11.

Four migrants — two from Cuba and two from St. Maarten — were rescued on July 11, but 15 other people are still missing, in spite of an extensive search that included the United States and Dutch Caribbean coast guards, as well as Virgin Islands Search and Rescue.

The vessel was carrying 15 Cubans, one Colombian, a Dominican Republic national, and two people from St. Maarten, according to the USCG.
