A senior immigration officer was fined $1,500 in Magistrates’ Court Tuesday after being found guilty of common assault, disorderly conduct and indecent language.

Magistrate Tamia Richards told the court Edrick Fahie is a government employee who has been an immigration officer for 25 years and is close to retirement. She ordered him to pay $250 for the charge of indecent language; $250 for disorderly conduct; and $1,000 for common assault.

The magistrate said she took into consideration the fact that it was his first offence, but also said the court must send a message due to the prevalence of such crimes and the fact that it was committed against an authority figure — a security guard.

Mr. Fahie had allegedly assaulted a security guard at Prospect Reef Resort Hotel around 5 a.m. on Jan. 25, 2011. He was ordered to pay the fine by 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Mr. Fahie also faces traffic related charges, which will be dealt with on a later date, Ms. Richards said.
