The Ministry of Communications and Works has implemented interim measures to facilitate the driver’s licence renewal process for work permit holders, according to MCW Minister Mark Vanterpool.

Those in the process of renewing work permits will be issued a letter from the Labour Department, Mr. Vanterpool said in a statement release by Government Information Services. This letter is to be taken to the Department of Motor Vehicles, the statement said, adding, “Thereafter, pending no other circumstances, the licence will be issued.”

Mr. Vanterpool said his ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour to implement the interim solution.

DMV Commissioner Lorna Christopher said challenges occurred when driver’s licences expired before work permits were processed.

“Since there was no physical work permit, the department had to comply with the Road Traffic Regulations and could not renew the licences,” Ms. Christopher said.

An amendment made to the regulations last March stipulated that “work permit or contract workers’ driver’s licence may be issued for not longer than the permit or contract.”

Currently the MCW is pursuing policy changes that would amend this section of the law, according to GIS.
