The BVI Cycling Federation will host the annual Jason Bally Memorial Road Race on Sunday.

Cyclist and Virgin Islands resident Jason Bally, of Trinidad, was gunned down 16 years ago in Sea Cows Bay after robbers fled the scene. An annual cycling race is now held in his honour.

A memorial candlelight service will be held in Sea Cows Bay near the old Domino’s Gas Station at 6 p.m.on Saturday.

On Sunday, the race will start at the West End Police Station at 7 a.m. Cyclists will ride on the main road towards Frenchmans Cay junction and turn around and race to Pleasant Valley junction. At this point, cyclists will turn around and return to the start/finish line for 10.4 miles.

In Category A, cyclists will complete seven laps for 72.8 miles, while Category B will complete five miles for 52 miles. Mountain bikers and junior cyclists will do two laps for 20.8 miles.

Pre-race registration will be held immediately after the memorial service at DDs Auto Detailing in Sea Cows Bay. The registration fee is $20 for all participants, with the exception of junior competitors who pay no fee.

“We are looking forward to a most memorial competition in honour of our fallen fellow cyclist Jason Bally,” BVI Cycling Federation President Darel Christopher said.
