Marvin Grant made history when he became the first Lions Club district governor from the Virgin Islands at the service organisation’s 98th international convention in Honolulu, Hawaii.

For one year starting on July 1, he and 743 other district governors will oversee about 45,000 Lions clubs made up of nearly 1.4 million members in 210 countries and geographical areas around the world, according to the Lions Club of Tortola.

Mr. Grant’s Lions “sub district,” called 60B, includes the English-speaking islands in the Caribbean Sea spanning from Grenada in the south to the Cayman Islands in the north.

Lions in the district are involved in various service projects, including diabetes awareness, food and clothing drives, sight preservation, care for the elderly, and others, according to the club.

Mr. Grant, a medical technologist at Medicure Ltd., has been an active member of the Tortola Lions Club for 13 years and is the first member to serve in the district governor post in the VI.

He was elected to the position in May at the Lions’ 35th Multiple District 60 Convention in Jamaica. Before that, he served in various other positions within the organisation.

Among the VI members serving with him on the District 60B team are Maria Vieira, cabinet secretary and treasurer; Vanessa Rymer, Zone 2A chairperson; Norval Young, sergeant at arms; Sean Rose, associate public relations chairperson; Coralie George, GMT associate chairperson; and Darryl Flanders, Leo associate chairperson.
