What do you get for chasing high school students around with a baseball bat? A $2,000 fine in one case.

Kadeem Maynard allegedly lost his temper while searching for a stolen cell phone at Elmore Stoutt High School on June 1, 2011, and ended up threatening several students with a baseball bat, prosecutors said.

Facing a charge of carrying an offensive weapon, he appeared on Monday before Magistrate Tamia Richards, who told him to pay the $2,000 fine by 3:30 p.m.

According to court records, Mr. Maynard and Petranella Frett arrived at ESHS after hearing from Ms. Frett’s daughter, who said her cell phone had been stolen.

Mr. Maynard spoke to the school’s assistant principal before proceeding to the girl’s classroom, where he began searching other students for the phone, prosecutors said. A dispute ensued.

Later, at the school’s main gate, Mr. Maynard went to his jeep to retrieve a baseball bat and allegedly threatened a group of students who were exiting the school grounds.

If he does not pay the fine, Mr. Maynard will face a six-month prison sentence.
