Expatriates’ Virgin Islands driver’s licences will no longer be tied to their work permits, according to a notice Gazetted June 27.

The change, which was ordered by Communications and Works Minister Mark Vanterpool on June 15, reverses a policy instituted in February 2011.

The rules had linked each licence’s validity to the expiration date of the permit. Because permits are issued on an annual basis, this meant that permit holders could not renew their licences for a three-year period as they could before the change.

The rules had also made getting a licence more complicated for foreigners who reside in the territory part-time, because the licence was only valid for the duration of an entry stamp.
