Overall, Virgin Islands students fared “average” on the 2013 CXC Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examinations this year, Education and Culture Minister Myron Walwyn said in a statement released Friday.

All told, 288 candidates sat the exams, compared to 246 last year, representing a 14.6 percent increase, according to the minister.

Of the 288 candidates, 255 were students within the territory’s public and private secondary schools.

Of the 256 candidates who sat the English language exam, 187 candidates received Grades I–III passes, indicating a pass rate of 73.04 percent, Mr. Walwyn said.

Of the 194 candidates who sat the mathematics exam, 107 received Grades I–III passes, for a pass rate of 55.2 percent.

“This year also saw students challenging themselves to sit more exams,” Mr. Walwyn said. “The territory had 14 candidates who each sat 10 subject examinations, with seven of the candidates achieving a 100 percent success rate.”
