Mr. Smith, who is replacing former Commissioner David Morris, was appointed by acting Governor Inez Archibald after recommendations by the Police Service Commission and the National Security Council, according to the Governor’s Office.

He joined the Sussex Police in 1985, and served in several leadership positions during his nearly 30 years with the agency. Most recently, he was promoted to assistant chief constable in May 2013 as head of operations command for Surrey and Sussex Police.

The married father of two is also an accredited strategic firearms commander and public order commander.

“I am looking forward to using my experience to support my new colleagues, and to working with the governor, members of government, partners and stakeholders, and most of all the communities for whom we have a duty to serve and keep safe,” he said.
