Six months have passed since a fire destroyed a Road Town shoe store on Sept. 6, but officials have not disclosed the cause of the blaze.

“Investigations into this matter are progressing,” said Police Information Officer Diane Drayton. “The [Royal Virgin Islands Police Force] can give no timelines for its conclusion or comments on the investigation.”

The fire, which occurred at Hazem’s, was reported to the VI Fire and Rescue Service at 1:52 a.m., and two fire trucks and eight fire officers responded to the scene within one minute.

Chief Fire Officer Zebalon McLean previously stated that firefighters initially watered down the building from the outside, and then entered the store and “attacked” the fire from the interior.

Despite the quick response, Mr. McLean said the building was severely damaged.

“The downstairs that houses the shoe store was pretty gutted,” he said. “I would describe that as a total loss.”

No injuries were reported, and nearby establishments were not damaged.
