New parks and improvements at existing parks are part of the National Parks Trust’s plans for this year and next, thanks in part to funding from the European Commission, NPT Director Joseph Smith-Abbott told legislators during the recent deliberations of the Standing Finance Committee.

The trust expects to develop architectural drawings early this year for “enhancement of facilities” at several parks, including The Baths and The Coppermine in Virgin Gorda, Sage Mountain, and the iguana facility on Anegada, Mr. Smith-Abbott is recorded as saying in the SFC report. The work itself won’t start until late in the year, and will continue into 2013, he said.

The trust plans to add parks as well, according to the report, although no details about where the new parks might be are included. In the past, NPT officials have said that Smuggler’s Cove was earmarked to be a park.

The trust also plans to be more involved in areas used by the public, such as Long Bay, Beef Island, and Smugglers Cove, Mr. Smith-Abbott told legislators.
