“Re-use, recycle, conserve,” chanted a group of about 50 students and staff members from the Conservation and Fisheries Department and the Governor’s Office.

They were making their way from the Festival Village Grounds to the Central Administration Building during the annual Parade for the Planet, which was held as part of Environment Month.
Many of the participants were dressed in costumes and carried placards like the one held by a Joyce Samuel Primary School student, which read, “Environmental education will go a long way to help protect our BVI, every single day.”

The turnout for the parade was significantly lower than what organisers have seen since the event began eight years ago, said Environment Education Officer Cynara Duncan.

Despite the modest turnout, however, the participants were passionate about the messages they chanted, according to Ms. Duncan.

“I think the students have a good understanding to the purpose of the parade,” she said. “Over the years, the community has participated well in the month. We’ve seen them come out in numbers.”

This year marked the 25th year since the territory began observing Environment Month, she added.
