Alberto Rosa de la Rosa, who was convicted last year of fatally stabbing Ricky Dennis Bautista Familia during a 2012 bar fight in Sea Cows Bay, was sentenced to 10 years in prison at the High Court on Friday.

Additionally, he was ordered to attend stress management classes.

Mr. Rosa de la Rosa, an entertainer who performs under the name Piyoyo, was accused by Senior Crown Counsels Valston Graham and Leslie-Ann Faulkner of starting and finishing the fight at Jasmine’s Bar that ultimately ended the life of Mr. Familia.

According to the prosecutors, the fight started because Mr. Familia made jokes that the defendant found offensive.

The Crown had called on multiple witnesses, including bar patrons who testified to seeing various stages of the altercation.

However, defence attorney Patrick Thompson had argued that the prosecution had failed to provide adequate evidence, as none of the Crown’s witnesses had testified to actually seeing the defendant stab the victim.

Mr. Rosa de la Rosa, who has no previous convictions, remained at large for a year after the incident, but was extradited from New York in 2014.

A translator was provided throughout the trial for the Dominican Republic native, whose native language is Spanish.
