There used to be a tradition in the Virgin Islands during years

when there were no murder trials. In commemoration of a peaceful year, the attorney general would present the judge who presided over the annual assizes with a pair of white gloves.

In the 1960s and 1970s, when Joseph Williams was a young officer here, he saw a lot of gloves being exchanged.

Mr. Williams, now 70 and retired, is one of many veteran officers and community members celebrating the 45th anniversary of the RVIPF during Police Week, which began Sunday with a service at the Sea Cows Bay Methodist Church.

The next day, officers gathered at the Road Town Police Station to compete in a dominoes competition. An open house at the station followed Tuesday, and additional gaming activities are scheduled throughout the week.

Thursday there will be a bingo and social night at the station. Friday, police officers will host a variety show at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.

Police Week is scheduled to end on Saturday with a “March Against Crime,” starting from the Sir Olva Georges Plaza at 9 a.m.
