The vessels were intercepted in VI waters close to Virgin Gorda. Three men aboard them were detained, and police said they have seized suspected drugs.

Police did not identify the men or the boats or provide further information about the drugs.

As of Thursday morning, the vessels were being “comprehensively searched for contraband,” and the three men remained in custody, police said, adding that no one was hurt during the operation.

Wednesday at around 10:30 p.m. several police officers and others milled around the Marine Police Base at Road Reef.

A fishing boat was docked between a VI police boat and a US Customs and Border Patrol boat. Two officers, one of whom carried an assault rifle, boarded the US boat for about 15 minutes before returning to the marine base.

“This is an excellent example of professional joint working between the BVI and the US law enforcement authorities,” said VI Detective Chief Inspector Kath Adams. “We look forward to our continued collaboration across Police, Customs and Immigration, helping to make the region a safer place.”
