With the police chasing after him, sirens blaring, Mario Matthew began throwing dime bags out the window of his car, prosecutors said.

Mr. Matthew pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis and failure to stop at the sound of sirens in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

He initially faced a charge of reckless driving, which Crown prosecutors decided not to pursue after his guilty plea.

All told, he was found to have 11.5 grams of marijuana, which has a value of $110.50, according to the Senior Crown Counsel Christilyn Benjamin.

In mitigation Mr. Matthew said he has been before the court for much worse offences, like possessing a few hundred grams of cocaine.

“But I don’t sell drugs no more,” he said. “The only thing that remains is my own habit. I’m trying, but everything takes time.”

Mr. Matthew was ordered to attend drug rehabilitation at the Sandy Lane Centre and to return to court on Oct. 7 for sentencing.
