The Internet isn’t known for fostering thoughtful discussions, but that didn’t sway Premier Dr. Orlando Smith and more than 20 of his Facebook friends from participating in an online conversation Dr. Smith called Premier Live this week.

The topics discussed ranged from tourism to animal cruelty, from public finance to the public water supply, with some participants asking questions and others offering suggestions.

Dr. Smith opened the discussion at 5 p.m. Sunday without naming a topic. Early commentators began by asking about economic development plans, health care access in Virgin Gorda, and a very specific question about business licence applications.

“Doc, I want to know why when I’m applying for a business licence that I have to give a address for the business before I get the licence. Isn’t that putting the cart before the horse?” wrote Sylvia Fahie.

“We ask for that information so we can take a look at the entire package,” responded Dr. Smith. “Is the business in a viable location? How likely is it to succeed in the planned location? Those are all things that help us to determine the viability of a business licence application.”
