The entirety of the government’s $45 million loan from Banco Popular may go toward the new hospital, Premier Dr. Orlando Smith said last Thursday at the House of Assembly, adding that “it is still too early to say definitely.”

Dr. Smith was answering a question from Julian Fraser (R-D3) about the 2009 loan, which originally was slated to be split, with $15 million going to the National Sewerage Project and $30 million to the hospital.

Dr. Smith said that $2 million from the government’s cash balances has been approved for sewerage work in East End/Long Look, and that “in the event that there are additional savings after the completion of the hospital, all these savings will go directly toward the sewerage project.”

However, once construction is completed on the new hospital, government will still need to finish sourcing equipment, Health and Social Development Minister Ronnie Skelton said at the sitting.

Mr. Skelton explained that according to planning documents for commissioning the new hospital, an additional $10 million in equipment is still needed.
