When it comes to his health, Clifton Stoutt takes no chances, he said as he waited with nearly 50 other men at the BVI Red Cross headquarters on Friday to get screened for prostate cancer.

“I’m always comfortable with anyone, because this is for my own good,” said Mr. Stoutt, who was accompanied by a volunteer who would take him through each step of the process. “If anything is wrong with me, I have the chance of treating it early on.”
That’s the whole idea behind the event, which has been organised annually by the BVIRC and Rotarians for 16 years, said urologist Dr. Charles McWilliams.
Thousands of residents have taken advantage of the free tests since they began, according to Dr. McWilliams.

“Many of the men are very concerned that they might have prostate cancer,” said the doctor, who has volunteered to examine participants since 2004. “After the exams and discussions, they go away very relieved.”

The screening will continue on Saturday in Road Town, and a screening will be held next Saturday, Jan. 31, in Virgin Gorda.
