Ramon Santiago’s attorney said he was on a “joy ride” with friends in the waters around Tortola when the boat’s captain decided to stop for something to eat and then left without Mr. Santiago.

Mr. Santiago pleaded guilty to illegal entry in court yesterday, an offence that can carry a sentence of up to 12 months, Magistrate Tamia Richards said.

“I apologise to the government and to this court for my actions,” the 37-year-old native of Puerto Rico told the court.

Magistrate Tamia Richards asked for prosecutors to provide her with sentencing guidelines.

Mr. Santiago, who is currently being detained, is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday for sentencing.
