Lemur selfie

Beaconites love Instagram and often update the Beacon’s account with new photos.

One reporter also occasionally checks out who else is posting under the #bvi tag. This week she was glad she was watching the tag, because she came across the funniest selfie she’s ever seen. According to Instagram user Paula Froelich, who posted the photo Jan. 19, a friend was visiting Mosquito Island when her phone was snatched by one of the island’s resident lemurs. When the friend got her phone back, this photo was on it. The reporter isn’t sure if the photo was taken purely by accident or if the lemur had seen enough people taking selfies that it picked up the behaviour from them intentionally. Either way, she’s entertained.

Stuck in Antigua again

A Beaconite wrote this Reporter’s Notebook item while sitting at the VC Bird International Airport in Antigua after his LIAT flight was delayed not once, but twice, en route to a Caribbean Development Bank press conference in Barbados. Two slices of pizza and a club soda cost $24 at this airport, so the Beaconite is afraid he will starve if he’s stuck here much longer. If no article on the CDB event appears in next week’s issue, you’ll know the Beaconite never made it to Barbados.

Getting smarter

Last week, a Beaconite attended part of a three-day Smart Board training session for teachers. During the session, the educators were taught ways to bring the Internet into their classrooms. The reporter found the session very interesting, and she can’t wait to see students benefit. The Internet, after all, is a wonderful learning tool.

Ticket snafu

After hearing all the talk about the Ladysmith Black Mambazo concert this week, a Beaconite decided he didn’t want to miss out. To save himself the trouble of driving to H. Lavity Stoutt Community College to purchase tickets, he called and asked to buy them by credit card. An organiser immediately e-mailed him a payment form, which he filled out and sent back. Unfortunately, however, the Beaconite didn’t realise that his credit card expired this month, and he doesn’t have the replacement yet. Though this was certainly an inconvenience for the college staff, they quickly set up alternative arrangements for him to pick up his tickets. Throughout the ordeal, which involved a back-and-forth of several e-mails, the HLSCC staff were very courteous and responsive. The Beaconite thanks them for their refreshing professionalism. And although the concert happened after press time last night, he suspects that he will have enjoyed it very much.

Yoga

A Beaconite started attending outdoor yoga classes last week by the beach at Nanny Cay. Although she’s sure she looks quite awkward next to the more advanced participants, she’s enjoying the sessions, and hopes she’ll look a bit more graceful with time. She especially liked the prone savasana pose at the end of class, which she found very relaxing. The next day she woke up quite sore, but hopefully that’s just a sign her muscles are becoming stronger. She also found it amusing when a cat wandered into the class. Given that cats are basically nature’s natural yogis, she suspects the animal just wanted to show off.

More water, please

Many doctors recommend drinking at least 3.7 litres of water daily. A Beaconite has long struggled to reach that mark, in part because she finds water rather boring and prefers juice. However, she recently learned to make her own flavoured water using blueberries and lemons. Now, she drinks at least three 800-milliletre bottles of water every day – a great improvement for her.
