Boat for sale

If you’re a movie buff and an avid sailor, then Afrodesia might be perfect for you. The 43-foot sailboat belongs to actor Morgan Freeman, but he is putting it on the market. The Virgin Gorda homeowner keeps the boat at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour and plans to donate the proceeds to charity. As of press time, it was unclear what charity will benefit from the sale. Mr. Freeman, who recently turned 78, has owned the boat for 19 years.

Bomb scare

On Friday, a Beaconite who was scheduled to fly to St. Maarten was worried to read news of a bomb scare at the country’s Princess Juliana International Airport. Details of the incident are unclear, but it happened at about noon, and by 2 p.m. the authorities had issued an all clear and flights were allowed to land again. The reporter was pleased with the smooth flow at the airport when she arrived, but she couldn’t help wondering how a similar incident would have played out in this territory. She hopes that the BVI Airports Authority reviews such policies often and stays current with security standards.

Not accurate

While flying back to the territory on Monday, a Beaconite passed some time reading a magazine provided on board her LIAT flight. The magazine, which gave information about several destinations in the Caribbean, was a bit off on one point, she thought: It named “barbequed Anegada Lobster” as the territory’s main dish. Perhaps the magazine’s staff should listen to the Lashing Dogs’ song Fungi and Fish, which clearly explains the VI’s official national dish.

Trip advisor

A Beaconite planning on hosting a friend in the territory over the August Emancipation Festival holidays is enjoying being the trip planner much more than she thought she would. Her friend is an avid hiker, so the trip will include visits to at least two national parks: The Baths and Sage Mountain. The reporter also wants to take her friend to her favourite beach, Smugglers Cove, and to at least one good snorkelling spot. She is also looking forward to introducing her friend to a bit of Virgin Islands culture at some of the events that will be held at Festival, including the August Monday Parade. While she wants to be well prepared, the reporter also hopes that the trip will bring at least a few surprises to make the visit extra memorable.

Locked out

After returning home one evening, a Beaconite realised she had locked herself out of her apartment. She found cement blocks in her backyard, dragged them over to the window, and climbed into her apartment via the kitchen. She felt pleased with herself for a moment … and then she remembered that she’d put her keys in her bra for safekeeping. Sigh.

Fourth fun

An American Beaconite travelled to St. John for the first time to celebrate Independence Day on July 4. While there, he visited St. John Brewers, the home of his favourite beer in the Virgin Islands: the Island Hoppin’ IPA. The visit did not disappoint, as the Beaconite feasted on homemade pizza and a wide array of tasty microbrews at the brewery’s Tap Room. His favourite new brew was the coffee stout, of which he brought back a few bottles to share with his friends – along with other St. John Brewers swag, including a T-shirt. He hopes some of the microbrews he tasted on St. John will soon come to Tortola. If not, another trip there is due soon.
