Syndicated matters

Firstly, the Beacon would like to apologise for accidentally publishing the same crossword puzzle for two weeks in a row. Readers will be happy to know that the newest version of the puzzle is in this week’s issue.

On the same page, readers will also notice that the Dr. Gott column is no longer a feature in this newspaper. That is because Dr. Gott is no longer writing features for syndication. The Beacon will replace the column with Green Living by Shawn Dell Joyce, who writes about environmental issues. Beaconites hope readers enjoy the new feature, and any feedback is welcome: Just send an e-mail to bvibeacn@surfbvi.com

Rainbow nation

Lately it seems like rainbows have been popping up everywhere around the territory. On average, one Beaconite has seen at least two rainbows each week in the last month — a personal record during his eight years in the territory. And he isn’t the only one spotting the colourful arcs. Friends of the Beacon’s Facebook page have also posted photos of rainbows from around the territory. The Beaconite knows that the rainbows are a product of rain and sun, but he hopes they are also a sign of good fortune to come in 2012.

A little help

At a recent assignment, a Beaconite received some photo assistance from a friend. Usually, good lighting is needed to take a photo, but sometimes too much lighting can be a problem. This was the case a week ago when a light shone directly into the lens of the Beaconite’s camera. As the Beaconite was contemplating what to do, he was greeted by a friend. The Beaconite asked him to stand in front of the light to block the glare. His friend was happy to help out, and the Beaconite was able to capture the image.

NFL playoffs

The National Football League playoffs have started in the United States, but at least one player is not in action. New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has been spotted in the Virgin Islands, according to online reports. His team missed qualifying for the playoffs after finishing the season 8-8. He threw three interceptions in his last game against the Miami Dolphins. “I’ve got to play better for us to win,” Mr. Sanchez told Yahoo Sports. “I can’t throw it to them three times.” Beaconites are uncertain what he plans to do in the VI, but they’re pretty sure the visit will be a lot less stressful than an NFL playoff game. And they hope it will help him improve his game enough to make the playoffs next year.

Young and green

On Friday, a Beaconite joined scores of residents at U.P.’s Cineplex to watch a free documentary, “Waste Land,” hosted by the group World House Caribbean. The documentary features an artist who works with garbage pickers in Brazil to create art projects. The reporter noticed a lot of young people at the U.P.’s event, which was organised by young people as well. The showing was part of World House Caribbean’s efforts to discourage the use of plastic bags in the territory. The Beaconite was glad to see the younger generation taking the lead in helping to create an eco-friendly mentality in the territory.

Crash

The Beacon received a photo of a one-vehicle accident on Beef Island that occurred on Monday morning. The motorist slammed into the guardrail that divides the two lanes over the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge. There were no injuries, and police are investigating the accident, according to Police Information Officer Diane Drayton.
