As the 2016-2017 school year commences, the Road Town Public Library’s doors will remain locked, and government isn’t saying when it might reopen.

Shut down since mid-May with little explanation, the branch will be “closed until further notice,” according to a three-sentence statement released Tuesday by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

It was the first public notice about the dormant library since May 17, when a government bulletin announced that it would be closed for the week because of a malfunctioning air-conditioning unit.

April Glasgow, information officer for the MEC, confirmed that the malfunctioning air-conditioning unit continues to be the cause of the shutdown, but she said she did not know the timeline for the library’s reopening.

Chief Librarian Suzanne Greenaway could not be reached for comment. In July, she also said she did not know the timeline for the library’s closure.

For years, the Public Library Service has sought to move out of its Road Town location, which has been plagued by mould and other issues.
