Last weekend, Five Makos/BVI Swim Federation swimmers competed in the 34th Dolphin Invitational Swimming Championships on St. Croix.

Four islands were represented at this meet including the St. Croix Dolphins, St. Eustatius Super Splash Swim Team, St. Marten Stingrays and the Makos Swim Club.

The Virgin Islands team included Keyon Sampson, Khadija Sampson, Kassia Nichols, Kurt Salapare and Arrianna Angus.

All told, the VI swimmers won 24 medals: nine gold, 12 silver and three bronze.

The top swimmer for the VI was 8-year-old Khadija Sampson, who won six gold medals and the high-point award for her age group with a perfect score of 120 points. She was also on the 12-and-under relay teams that won the gold and silver.

Other notable swimmers were Keon Sampson, who won the second place high-point award in the 13 to 14 boys age group.

Coach Elsworth Phillip said he was happy with the way the swimmers performed at the two-day meet held annually in St. Croix. It was the first time that the VI swimmers competed in a 50-metre pool and “they had great swims and established many personal bests in their individual and relay events,” the coach said.

The team practises at Prospect Reef in Road Town.

All that these kids achieve wouldn’t be possible without them providing a place for the kids to train, according to a BVISF release sent to this paper.
