The Julian Fraser Save the Seed League got under way on Saturday in Duffs Bottom at the Save the Seed Energy Centre. Several games were played, including a junior division game featuring Ghut Boys and the Thunders.

The Julian Fraser Save the Seed National Basketball League got under way on Saturday in Duffs Bottom.

An opening ceremony was held at the Save the Seed Energy Centre. Third District Representative and league co-founder Julian Fraser, league chairwomen Kharid Fraser and league co-founder Bishop John Cline made remarks prior to the start of the league.

Additionally at the league opening, last year’s champions, West Gunners, were awarded their rings.

The defending champions then took on the Splash Brothers in the first game of the league.

The West Gunners won, 93-86, in front of a packed house.

West Gunners’ Rowan Victor led all scorers with 24 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. He also had six steals and 10 assists. Teammate Nigel Carey had 23 points and six rebounds and D’moi Hodge scored 14 and grabbed eight rebounds in the win.

The Splash Brothers were led by Jehmeley Benjamin with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Shamou Dagou scored 21 points and hit five three pointers in the loss.

On Sunday, the Ghut Boyz beat the Thunders.

Jaheem Gumbs, of the Ghut Boyz, scored 10 points and teammate Elroy Bollers had seven points in the win.

Marcus Butler was the top scorer for the Thunders.

In the second game, Red Zone beat the Starz, 56-54.

Red Zone’s Jamal Serrant led all scorers with 21 points and seven rebounds.

In the final game of the weekend, the Bayside Blazers rolled over We Dem Boyz, 84-54.

Dion Blyden had 14 points, while Cravern Andrew and Ryan Alfred each scored 12 points each in the win.

Ronald Antoine, of We Dem Boyz, led all scorers with 15 points.

The league continues tomorrow and through the weekend.
