A forum to discuss the recent rash of scooter- and motorcycle-related deaths will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at G-Spot, located downstairs at U.P.’s Cineplex.

Event organiser and former professional motorcycle rider Shane Winter said he felt compelled to speak up about the issue after several people close to him were involved in accidents. He said the forum is especially targeted towards young riders.

“I’m hoping this will save some lives of our young people,” he said. “This is the first open-mic discussion on the issue.”

Mr. Winter, who has raced in clubs and events around the world, said Tortola’s roads were much safer when he was younger.

“Young people need to be aware that accidents do happen, but a lot of stuff can be done to prevent them from being fatal,” he said.

He attributed the growing danger to an increasing population and more motorists.

He said he’s seen a recent improvement in the safety habits of riders.

“I’ve already seen a difference,” he said. “Right after I announced the forum I saw more people wearing helmets.”

Though the concentration of the forum will be scooter and motorcycle safety, Mr. Winter said other health topics will be discussed, too.

“Hopefully, everyone can come out and support this,” he said.
