The new logo painted on the tail of BVI Airways’ Jetstream 32 features two white sails in front of a blue sunset.

The symbol reflects the Virgin Islands-based airline’s desire to be the preferred air carrier for residents and visitors to the territory, said Jerry Willoughby, the company’s new president.

“It’s the sailing capital of the world, so we incorporated that into our logo,” Mr. Willoughby said in an interview this month.

The company was founded in 2009 as a partnership of two American pilots and the firm Romney Associates, offering scheduled flights between Tortola, Dominica, Antigua and St. Maarten.

In March, the airline announced that it had been sold to a New York-based merchant bank that plans to upgrade and expand the company’s fleet. Mr. Willoughby said that his firm Colchester Aviation LLC is interested in taking what was started and improving the fleet and route map.

“It came to our attention about nine months ago as a very unique opportunity to take what is small but can potentially grow into a very influential airline out here, particularly as a BVI-based company, to expand within the Caribbean, particularly among destinations that aren’t served,” he said.
