Eating pea soup on Sunday afternoons is an old tradition in the Virgin Islands, according to Clarence Freeman.

Mr. Freeman was among scores of seniors who lined up to have a cup of the soup made with pig tail after a ceremony held Friday at the 1780 Old Sugar Works Museum to mark the beginning of Senior Citizens’ Month.

“We had some good days that we passed through,” Mr. Freeman said as he waited to be served. “So now we have to teach the young people how it was during the old times.”

Activities are scheduled throughout the month: senior games are slated for 4 p.m. Wednesday at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds; a general knowledge challenge for 6 p.m. May 16 at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall; and a variety concert at 3 p.m. May 20 at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, among others.
