Several players from the Virgin Islands competed in the Youth 4 Youth Junior Tennis Tournament last weekend on St. Thomas.
Jeron Smith won his division, while Paul Oliver took second place in his division.
In the under-12 division, Dmoni Green had a bye in the first round, while Adrian Baijanuth defeated Samer Mohanani, 6-0, 6-0.
In the second round, Adrian was defeated by Nayan Bansal, 0-6, 1-6.
In Dmoni’s first match, he beat Sky Moraino in three sets, 6-2, 4-6 and 7-5.
“This quarter final match was a great match for Dmoni, he played great tennis,” his coach Carol Mitchell said.
In the semifinal he lost to Kevin Hughes, 0-6, 1-6.
Deandre Baijnauth played in the under-10-division, but it “was not organised properly,” Ms. Mitchell said. He played one match and lost, 2-4.
On Saturday, the boys under-14 division played its first match with Talsim Mathias losing to Nicholas Middler, 3-6, 3-6.
Dondre Green defeated Jemoi Gerald in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8. According to the rules, the third set was won by a 10-point tie breaker. Jeron defeated Jaydan Jacobs, 6-1, 6-3.
In the semifinal, Dondre and Jeron played a great match, according to Ms. Mitchell.
However, Jeron would win, 6-3, 6-1. He would go on to beat St. Thomas’ number player Jevon Henry to win the division, 6-3, 7-5.
The tournament director enter Paul in the under-18 because of the level of his game, he entered the Choice Adult tournament and did great, Ms. Mitchell said.
He played his first match on Saturday and defeated Ian Barrows, 6-3, 6-3. In the second round, he defeated Daniel Knott 6-0, 6-1.
He reached the finals, but lost to the number ranked player Wilbur Williams, 1-6, 5-7.
