Five years after a student died from injuries sustained in a traffic accident in Paraquita Bay, government has installed speed bumps in the area.

The Ministry of Communications and Works announced Friday that the devices had been put in place adjacent to the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.

Residents had been calling for traffic calming measures in the area since April 13, 2010, when Wendell Varlack’s taxi struck 22-year-old Tofficah Thompson, carrying her 117 feet down the road.

Extra lighting was installed, but until last week, little else had been done to improve road safety in the area despite promises made by representatives of both major political parties.

The speed bumps come about two weeks after the fifth anniversary of Ms. Thompson’s death: She died on April 30, 2010 of injuries from the accident.
