It was smooth sailing for the start of the 41st BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival on Tuesday – maybe too smooth.

Due to a lack of wind, the Bitter End Cup race was postponed. It was the first time in the Sailing Festival’s history that the first race had to be postponed due to weather, according BVISR Chairman Bob Phillips.

Most of the 50 boats scheduled to race on Tuesday left their sails rolled up and motored to Virgin Gorda’s North Sound. By the next day, the wind had picked up and a race around VG was held in its place.

“We have a lot of courses to choose from in case the weather doesn’t cooperate,” Mr. Phillips said. “We like to have options.”

This year’s regatta is on par with past events and should attract 95 to 100 entries, according to Paul Miller, who has handled the results and registration for the regatta for the past 11 years with his wife Deborah.
