The ability to snap a picture with a cell phone isn’t a recent innovation. Watching a video on an iPad, transferring a large sound file to a Blackberry, or using any of the apps and features that make a smartphone smart are no longer cutting-edge concepts.

But, Virgin Islands telecommunications executives say, providers are now making significant investments to their networks so that consumers can send data to each other faster than ever before.

The territory’s three mobile phone providers – LIME, Digicel and CCT Global Communications – have all announced plans to bring “4G” technology to their networks in the near future.

LIME’s upgraded “fourth generation” network, which came on stream on June 28, will soon be joined by its two competitors, though those companies haven’t yet announced launch dates.
