A committee that consulted with “cultural keepers” from around the Virgin Islands recommended a set of six different cultural symbols in 2010, but is still waiting to hear whether they’ll be formally adopted.

The five-member committee selected oleander as the official flower; fish and fungi as the official dish; fungi as the official music; mauby as the official drink; and guavaberry as the official liqueur, according to the 2010 Department of Culture annual report.

The committee chose white, green, blue and red as the official colours, with white representing territory’s beaches, green representing the vegetation, blue representing the sea and red representing the “feisty nature of Virgin Islanders,” the report says.

After making the selections, the committee prepared a draft Cabinet paper and submitted it to the Ministry of Education and Culture, but to date there has been no formal response from the ministry, Brenda Lettsome-Tye, deputy director of the Department of Culture, said this week.
