More than 30 racers from the BVI Mountain Bike Club will brave the sun of Anegada on Sunday for a 23-kilometre race. They will be competing for fun, for exercise and for a little recognition in the form of 21 trophies, which will be handed out to top finishers.

Though it’s a friendly club, Sally Ann Blackmore, the race’s organiser, said that the awards help encourage the racers to give it their all.

“Everybody likes to take something home with them,” she said.

Ms. Blackmore said that in the past the Mountain Bike Club has given out medals, but because Hurricane Earl prevented the group from holding a race on Anegada last year, they wanted the awards from this year’s race to have added meaning.

From beauty queens to athletes, long-serving employees and the fastest horse in the race, everybody wants a little recognition for their accomplishments. Two local businesses, JCB Engraving and de Castro Marking, help them get it, by supplying awards, trophies, plaques and other items.
