The High Court assizes kicked off last Thursday with the trial of Elrys Todman, who on Monday was found guilty of burglarising a Belmont Estate home and destroying property.

On Thursday Senior Crown Counsel Valston Graham is expected to make a recommendation to Justice Nicola Byer on Mr. Todman’s sentencing.

He was accused of breaking through a bathroom window in Julie Scatliffe’s house and stealing more than $6,000 worth of property on Feb. 3, 2010.

Mr. Graham told the Beacon after the conviction that he had not yet decided what his recommendation would be.

Among the items taken from Ms. Scatliffe’s house were two cell phones, three watches, a Sony Playstation and its controllers, five video games, and some jewellery.

The items belonged to Ms. Scatliffe’s son, Kareem Scatliffe, and were estimated to be worth $6,536.

Mr. Todman was also charged with destroying property for allegedly removing several glass panes from the bathroom window and pushing through its mesh screen.

Though none of the stolen items were found in Mr. Todman’s possession, the eight-member jury decided there was enough evidence for a unanimous conviction on both charges.
