After a nearly yearlong delay, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission has completed its spectrum allocation process, which will allow the territory’s telecom companies to upgrade their wireless internet services.

The TRC announced Tuesday that CCT Global Communications, Digicel and Flow were all successful in applying for a portion of the 700 megahertz, 1900 MHz and AWS-1 spectrum.

“The implementation of this technology in the Virgin Islands will provide enterprises, consumers and citizens with better quality mobile broadband services and is in line with developments that have already occurred in North America and Europe and are being implemented elsewhere across the Caribbean,” the TRC stated.

The regulator added that all three providers were successful with their first or second spectrum preferences in the allocation process.

The TRC originally hoped to allocate the airwaves last October, but CCT sued the agency that month after the regulator ruled the company ineligible to participate in the allocation process because it allegedly did not meet the award application requirements.

The process was stalled for months as the two parties litigated their case in the High Court.
