Three guests on the back deck of the 205-foot yacht Icon had a good view of the activity

in North Sound on Tuesday morning. From the dock at the Yacht Club Costa Smerelda-Virgin Gorda, the guests sat in lawn chairs watching as a 163-passenger cruise ship passed alongside three kayakers and several dozen moored charter yachts.

The maritime traffic was relatively light, though, considering that days earlier 28 “superyachts” — 12 luxury motor yachts and 16 racing sailboats 110 feet or longer — gathered in North Sound for the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous.

The four-day event brought yacht owners, spectators, international sponsors and professional sailors together at YCCS for the second year, and for the first time since the facility was completed in January. Event organisers said the increased regatta and marina activity at YCCS could have a significant economic impact on North Sound and the wider territory.

“With its unique layout and natural beauty, and with the marina here, we think the traffic will only increase. It’s not likely that it will decrease,” said Jan Pachner, the secretary general of YCCS’ North Sound facility.
