Eight Virgin Islands athletes competed in the 20th Commonwealth Games, which got under way last Wednesday in Glasgow, Scotland.

In swimming, Amarah Phillip had personal bests in all three of her races.

In the 50-metre freestyle race, Amarah placed 42nd overall with a time of 28.95 seconds, improving on her previous personal best of 29.18 seconds.

In the 50-metre butterfly race, she placed 38th overall with a time of 30.94 seconds, shaving a couple of seconds off her previous personal best of 32.10 seconds.

In the 100-metre butterfly race, she placed 26th overall with a time of 1:09.16 minutes, an improvement on her previous personal best of 1:16.35.’

Amarah’s sister, Elinah, also had strong performances, who almost beat her personal bests in both her races. She placed 30th overall in the 50-metre freestyle with a time of 27.57 seconds, her personal best is 27.54 seconds.

In the 100-metre freestyle race, she placed 31st with a time of 1:00.82 minutes, her personal best is 1:00.72’.

In squash, Joe Chapman won his first match in three straight sets to advance to the next round where he lost, 1-3.

However, Mr. Chapman won his match in the Men’s Classic Plate Quarter Finals, 3-1. He went on to play in the semi-finals on Sunday, but lost, 1-3, against Scotland’s Kevin Moran to end his 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Mr. Chapman competed in front of 3,000 fans and the match was broadcasted on live television.

His performance secured him a top 20 finish, and was the top player from the Caribbean.

In athletics, Karene King finished the 100 metres in fifth place in her heat. She was 27th overall – just three places from qualifying in with a time of 11.93 seconds. Ms. King competed yesterday in the 200 metres.

Ashley Kelly finished eighth in her 400-metre semi-final with a time of 54.35. With 24 competitors in the semi-finals, Ms. Kelly finished 22nd overall.

Chantel Malone became the second athlete in the territory’s history to advance to a Commonwealth Games final, when she competed in the long jump yesterday morning. Ms. Malone made her debut with a jump of 6.16 metres, then followed up with a 6.49-metre jump before her season’s best of 6.55 metres, which was the second best of the 12 who qualified for the final.She will compete in the final tonight.

Eldred Henry had the third best throw of his career in the shot put to place ninth in the Group A qualifying rounds, with a throw of 17.08 metres, but did not advance.

Mr. Henry threw 51.39 metres in the discus throw yesterday. He fouled his first two throws. Mr. Henry will now compete in the NACAC under-23 championships in Kamloops, Canada on Aug. 8-11.

Keron Stoute was only able to compete in the long jump in the decathlon before pulling out with an injury.

Tahesia Harrigan-Scott withdrew from the Commonwealth Games due to personal reasons.

More than 6,500 athletes from 71 countries competed in the games.
