Environment Month may have ended on June 30, but the recent “green” efforts of businesses, organisations and government departments will likely have lasting effects.

June’s activities were designed to raise awareness about conserving electricity, reducing waste and recycling, efforts that several Virgin Islands businesses say they’ve been stepping up in recent months.

General Manager Dame Peters said the Sunny Caribbee Spice Co. has always had a “green” focus. But in the last six months, customers increasingly have been asking for products that are healthier and environmentally friendly, Mr. Peters said. To reduce waste, the company redesigned its glass packaging to encourage reuse.

Other companies’ commitment to “greening” their operations was made evident last month by the launch of the Conservation and Fisheries Department’s Green Pledge programme. Fifty-four businesses, organisations and government agencies made a list of the goals and the specific actions they planned to undertake to help the environment.
