The Virgin Islands was “very lucky” this weekend, with no reports of damage caused by Tropical Storm Maria, Department of Disaster Management Director Sharleen DaBreo said Monday.

The system had been predicted to pass just south of the territory, and the majority of the thunderstorms and heavy rain were in the northern portion of the storm, she said.

But the storm passed farther north than most forecasts predicted, she said.

“We got protected in an area that did not have the thunderstorms and the excessive rain activity,” she said, adding that no damage was reported even in the northern areas of Virgin Gorda and Anegada. “We’re just very lucky that we were in that area.”
