The BVI Athletics Association has named 21 athletes including five individual medalists among its delegation for the 43rd CARIFTA Games in Fort de France, Martinique on April 19-21.

The announcement came during a press briefing at the Central Administration Building’s Breeze Way on Monday.

Of the 21 participants, 16 are in the under-18 division, which is comprised of 11 girls.  There will be six athletes competing at the games for the first time, and the territory has entered its first 400-metre male hurdler in its history. Additionally, 16 athletes are scheduled to double at the event.

The VI has been participating in the CARIFTA Games since 1976. Last year’s team won a record eight medals — four silvers and four bronzes — surpassing the 2012 haul of five medals in Bermuda.

The delegation departs on April 17 and returns on April 22.

The team consists of: Nelda Hugins, 100/200m; L’Tisha “Bella” Fahie, 100/200 metres; Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses, 400/800 metres; Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner, 800/1500 metres; Deya Erickson, 100/400 metres hurdles; Kala Penn, long jump/triple jump; Dekoya Hodge, shot put; Ashley Penn, long jump; Arianna Hayde, heptathlon; Beyonce DeFreitas, 400 metres; Zacharia “Zakie” Frett, 4 x 400 metre relay; Kyron McMaster, 400m/400 metres hurdles; Ronique Todman, 200/400 metres; Kadeon Potter, shot put; Tahj Malone, high jump, Taylor Hill, 100/200 metres; Trevia Gumbs, shot put/discus throw; Tynelle Gumbs, discus throw, javelin throw and shot put; Khari Herbert, 400 metres; and Tarique Moses, 400/800 metres.
