A Virgin Islands Party meeting originally scheduled for last week has been postponed until Aug. 13.

One of the meeting’s goals will be to choose a date for the VIP’s internal elections, according to Carvin Malone, the party’s president.

In the general election last June, the VIP lost all but two seats in the House of Assembly, with lawmakers Julian Fraser (R-D3) and Andrew Fahie (R-D1) forming the entirety of the opposition. The party’s constitution stipulates that the VIP should hold an internal election within three months of losing a general election.

A September 2015 meeting was scheduled to hold elections for party chairman, president, vice president, secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer, assistant treasurer, public relations officer and assistant public relations officer. Mr. Fraser, the current chairman and leader of the opposition, was expected to compete again with Mr. Fahie for the chairmanship after winning the position against him in June 2014.

However, Mr. Malone explained after the meeting that 46 of the 58 delegates present supported a motion to defer the election, in order to “have a chance to understand all that has taken place since the election of June 8.”
