Shopping in the Virgin Islands, whether you’re buying groceries or shoes, a cell phone or a takeaway lunch, you’re more likely than not to walk away with at least one plastic bag, which one way or another will probably make its way to a dump or incinerator.

Sophia Bain, a 23-year-old Virgin Islander, is looking to change that. Ms. Bain is working with stores across the territory to encourage shoppers to switch to environmentally friendly reusable bags.

“I’m hoping that if it’s just a very simple, targeted, direct message, people will go, ‘I can do that,’” said Ms. Bain, who is a law student at Queensland University of Technology in Australia. “‘I can use reusable bags instead of plastic bags.’”
