Organisers called the sixth annual Sensus Run/Walk for the Cause a sea of pink in support of breast cancer awareness, and a great afternoon of camaraderie and support by women for women. One hundred thirty-one women took part in the event Sunday to raise money to provide free mammograms and cervical cancer screenings for women in the Virgin Islands.

“Everyone knows at least one person that has been affected by breast cancer and the event allows people to show their support for such a worthy cause,” Lisa Adamson, one of the event organisers said, according to a press release from the gym.

“It was fantastic to get the support of so many women on Sunday and we hope to raise as much money as possible. We couldn’t have done this without everyone’s support and generous contributions to the cause. It was a really great afternoon,” Ms. Adamson added.

 Storm threat

Kate Jackson, another event organizer, said she agreed.

“The afternoon was a great success despite the looming threat from Tropical Storm Rafael,” she said.

The event saw all 131 women start out together at the park. The walkers went to Duffs Bottom while the runners continued to Sensus Health Club at Manuel Reef where they turned and headed back to the park.

The funds the event raised allows will pay for vouchers offering free mammograms to VI residents. The vouchers are distributed throughout the territory by the BVI Health Services Authority to local health clinics and women who need a mammogram. The women who receive a voucher simply hand it over at Eureka or Peebles Hospital and the mammogram fund pays the cost of their mammogram in full.

Participants and fundraisers can continue to collect sponsorships until Nov. 1, when the final tally of funds raised will be calculated.

For information regarding the free mammogram program, persons can contact Lisa Adamson or Kate Jackson at Sensus Health Club or Mike Adamson at 543-6975.
