A team of special investigators from the United Kingdom government received a warrant last week for Michael Misick, the former premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands, who is wanted on corruption charges.

Neil Smith, the spokesman for the TCI Governor’s Office, wrote in a statement that the policing organisation Interpol issued an internationally recognised request for Mr. Misick’s arrest known as a “red notice.”

“Every opportunity has been given to Mr. Misick to voluntarily surrender to the [investigators’] jurisdiction for interview,” Mr. Smith wrote. “Despite previous indications from Mr. Misick’s solicitors that he would attend for interview, he has failed to do so.”

Gordon Wetherell, TCI’s then-UK-appointed governor, suspended the territory’s constitution in 2009 and dissolved Mr. Misick’s government. According to a 266- page report published by a UK commission of inquiry, Mr. Misick and some of his ministers allegedly committed bribery and sold millions of dollars worth of Crown land for personal gain.
