Yes, there are at least three generations of white Virgin Islanders here in the territory.

Many of us have lived here since birth. We conduct business, raise families, pay taxes — and, yes, even vote!

The number of us is not known or published, but I am sure the district representatives know who we are. In my personal estimate, we are about 600 strong!

So why am I writing this?

Recently I encountered an immigration officer who notified me that I was in the wrong line at the airport. After I told her I was a VIslander, she asked if I had a VI passport. When I said yes, she seemed doubtful. So my daughter, my grandson and I went through her station (three generations of white VIslanders), and she seemed surprised.

Do immigration officials in the VI not realise we are here?

Just for the record, there are many white VIslanders living here, many of whom were not born elsewhere; we were born here and have stayed and worked, contributing to our heritage and being upstanding, proud VI citizens.

So it is about time we educate everyone we exist! It’s an election year!
